Saga hússins

Veitingarekstur hófst í þessu húsi 10 okt. 1981 eftir umfangsmiklar endurbætur í framhaldi áralangrar baráttu fyrir friðun húsa hér á lóðinni. Við endurbygginguna var þess gætt meðfram sjónarmiðum um notagildi að halda sem upprunalegustu útliti. T.d. eru gluggar og burðarviðir í húsinu að stórum hluta þeir sömu og voru upphaflega.
Húsið er með þeim eldri, sem enn standa í Reykjavík, upphaflega byggt sem íbúðarhús 1834. Fyrir því stóð P.C. Knudtzon, umsvifamikill kaupskipa- og verslunareigandi í Kaupmannahöfn og Reykjavík. Hann byggði jafnframt brauðgerðarhús og móhús á lóðinni og fékk hingað til lands danskan bakara, Tönnes Daniel Bernhöft til að reka hér brauðgerð.
Bernhöft keypti svo húsin 1845 og var lengi eini bakarinn í bænum og hafði mikið umleikis. Árið 1861 byggði hann geymsluhús (Kornhlöðuna) hér syðst á lóðinni og sölubúð við íbúðarhúsið 1885 (þar sem nú er veitingasalur næst götunni). Að honum látum hélt fjölskyldan áfram rekstri brauðgerða í tvo ættliði eða fram til 1944 í gamla bakaríinu.
Merkilegt má teljast að þetta hús skuli enn standa, því tvisvar var það selt til niðurrifs. Árið 1923 keypti KFUM og K húsið í því skyni að reisa hér stórhýsi og síðar íslenska ríkið árið 1931 til að byggja hér stjórnarráðshús, en framkvæmdir drógust og ekkert varð úr þessu áformum. Húsið var notað til íbúðar fram til 1961 og áfram rekin í því lítil verslun fram að endurreisn þess. Má því segja að húsið hafi verið í niðurníðslu um áratuga skeið meðan óvissa ríkti um framtíð þess þar til það var friðað ásamt öðrum húsum í sömu húsaröð árið 1979.
